As a young single parent, Mackenzie Elizabeth Taylor has struggled to provide for her teenage daughter. She finally catches a break when she inherits half of an apartment building in Boston from her uncle Al, along with his P.I. business. So what if she doesn't know the first thing about investigation or if their hot-but-crabby downstairs tenant is a police detective who's looking for any excuse to handcuff her? Her daughter, Mac the computer whiz, has her back. And these two girls don't know the meaning of the word quit - not even when their first case takes an unexpected turn.
The man Mackenzie's been hired to follow in a custody case seems to have upset more than just her client when she spies another person tailing him - a mysterious man Mackenzie would bet is up to no good. But when her mark suddenly winds up dead, and her first and only client is accused of his murder, Mackenzie vows to find the truth. Only one problem she doesn't know where to start...or when to draw the line. Who is the mysterious man she spotted tailing the victim? Is he the killer? Is she in over her head, or will she uncover the secrets someone killed to keep hidden? Mackenzie and Mackenzie are on the case, and the world of private investigation will never be the same.
Sleuthing for a Living Mackenzie Mackenzie PI Mysteries Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Jennifer L Hart Suzanne Cerreta Books
Perhaps my favorite book yet from Jennifer Hart. Which is saying something as I have liked them all. This is the first of a new series about an aspiring P.I. and somewhat struggling mom. Jennifer's books are always full of interesting characters and conflicted complex heroines. This though is perhaps the best.
Written with a light hand and a sharp sense of humor you have to love Mackenzie and her daughter Mackenzie. I loved her explanation about why she and her daughter had the same name. I won't spoil it for but, get ready for a good laugh when you get to it.
I have to believe that Jennifer is a keen observer of people as I see bits and pieces of people I have known in her characters. Well written, well edited and just plain fun. If you like your mysteries with a dose of humor then Jennifer and her quirky characters will definitely fill the bill. The only problem I have with this book is now I have to wait until the next one to see what new trouble Mackenzie get's into.

Sleuthing for a Living Mackenzie Mackenzie PI Mysteries Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Jennifer L Hart Suzanne Cerreta Books Reviews
I have to start off by saying that Jennifer L. Hart writes great series. There are interesting characters, usually a good mystery and just fun to read.
This is the first book in her new series. The mother-daughter relationship reminds me of the Gilmore Girls with the way they interact with each other. There's a hunky love interest that isn't a jerk and a mystery that I didn't figure out halfway through. This series is going on my auto buy list. I only hope she has the next one out soon.
This was the first book I read of Jennifer L. Hart.....some parts made me laugh, but interesting mystery. She is learning to be a detective as her as she goes along looking for clues....she's pretty good at it; and so she goes after clues.......Then her Mother comes to help, but this bugs her........then she gets mixed up with a cop.and so she goes after clues.....this is a funny myster; Ioved this family with a happy ending. wish she had another one to read. funny, but their
are clues when people start getting murdered......and she is smart.....her daughter helps using her computer. So Funny....read it.
LOVED THIS BOOK! What a great beginning to this series. Not your typical cozy ...this one has a young woman (who had her daughter at the age of 16) and now the daughter is 16 ... an inherited apartment building (from an uncle who was estranged from her dad - his brother), a new career (thanks to a PI for Dummies type of book), a hot tenant (who happens to be a police detective), and her baby daddy (who doesn't know he's a daddy!), along with so many other characters who are so memorable! I can't wait to read the next!
What a great new series, fast pace, quirky with characters bound to leave us wanting more stories. Mackenzie and Mac are a very young mother -daughter team who have been on their own since Mackenzie was a pregnant teen. These two have a close trusting relationship that seems to get them through every life occurrence. Mackenzie has chosen to become a P.I. after inheriting a city apartment house, complete with a nosy neighbor and hot policeman. The mystery they are following is fast paced and captivating. If you liked Gilmore Girls, this is an updated Laurelai, Rory including Emily mystery novel. The dialog is fast and upbeat and I'm rating this a solid five star first in a series novel. More , more more, please!
I received this as an ARC from the publisher for an unbiased review. I also bought my own copy. I loved this new series from Jennifer L Hart and can't wait to see what is in the future for these characters. Mackenzie and Mackenzie PI are a daughter and mother team have a dynamic relationship that the laughs and the suspense kept my interest. The chemistry between the team and their neighbors is pure amazing. It has great charm, plenty of laughs and a fabulous mystery.
I'm confused...
After reading the reviews on , I seem to be the only reader bothered by the similarities between Mackenzie and Mac and Lorelei and Rory Gilmore.
Their relationship is exactly the same, their kitchen is stocked with the same food, they wear the same clothes, Mackenzie being pregnant and unmarried at 16 is the same, and Emily Gilmore epitomizes the mother/grandmother.
The writing is certainly good and the story is a nice cozy. But as I read, I found myself getting really upset that all these things were just like one of my favorite TV shows.
Hunter, the love interest, is a bit of a cliche, but I found myself liking him anyhow. Easy to tell where that relationship was going.
If someone has never watched The Gilmore Girls and read this book, the story and the writing would be very pleasing to them. You can tell it's been well edited and it reads well. For me, the blatant use of GG was just too much for me to rate it higher.
What a great start to a new series.
Mackenzie Taylor had a daughter at age 16 and has looked after Mac as a single mom for 16 years. When her uncle Albert dies he leaves Mackenzie and her mother his big house (including tenants) and Mackenzie decides to move in. After finding Alberts manuscript 'Working Man's Guide to Sleuthing for a Living' Mackenzie decides to try and take up her uncle's profession as a PI.
Luckily, older attorney Len is willing to give Mackenzie a chance and her first job. With the help of computer whiz Mac and using her wits Mackenzie starts her first stakeout, only to be dragged into a murder case. And life gets more crazy and interesting after meeting handsome Detective (and neighbor) Hunter Black, her mother decides to move in as well and Mac has questions about her dad. Coffee just isn't enough!
I think this has the potential to be an enjoyable new favorite series. The characters are likeable, there is a love interest and a woman brave enough to start a new profession when strapped for money.
